Animatic

This is the first Draft of our Animatic, we presented this to our target audience as well as some of our other peers to gain a wider range of opinions.

Feedback

Following showing our animatic to the audience we asked for feedback.
We learnt that:

  • They didn't really understand the narrative, wasn’t clear enough for them.
  • The audience liked the general idea, however didn't feel like we were portraying in the best way, they thought the structure of how the narrative was presented could be better.
  • They thought that we could be slightly more imaginative with how we portrayed the narrative, i.e More Flashbacks, Different Framing shots - make more interesting.
  • Liked the Flashback idea of the memories, thought it helped to engage them emotionally however they suggested that more than just the memories in the park might be a good idea. One person even stated that potentially could have several shot and sharp memories of the family.
Having received this extremely constructive feedback, we now have to go back to the original storyboards and re-create them incorporating the feedback received in order to ensure that our music video appeals to the target audience, as this is initially for the video to be successful.

Script

The song lyrics are as follows:

when i was young you used to feed me, my friends they find it hard to believe me, what a special person you were, to me, to me, and to all of your family
it seems like yesterday that you passed,
but you know your soul will always last, god you know how much we love you, and what we'd do just to have you back,

joe, joe X2

20th of july 2004, the man from up above came and knocked on your door, and brought you straight up to his house, left an old frail lonely spouse, who says her prayers to you every night, in the shadow of her bedside light, god you know how much she loves you, and what she'd do just to have you back.

Joe, joe X2

then chorus again

Joe, Joe X2

Storyboard Development

Following out research, we have drawn our future idea into a storyboard. This storyboard shows what we hope to create from scene to scene, as can be seen below. We have also decided to use the newer song 'joe'.

Storyboard - First Draft

Our Ideas

We have now began to create a storyboard of the video we intend to make. To do this, as a group, we began to brainstorm possible ideas for our music video and then we shared these ideas with our peers to receive feedback that we would as constructive feedback. Our possible ideas are as follows:

Option 1:
Girl on her own, 'lost' essentially, following 'Ed sheeran - the A team' theme
Story related to drug issues perhaps that would add meaning to the video and some use of colour editing to the story to play on emotions and to add a sense of isolation. This would involve one main character, a girl, around the age of 17. The story of her daily life is shown and at points is tied in with the lyrics of the song.

Option 2:
Idea like "The Luminers - Stubborn Love' theme
Girl leaving her dad - moving away
We would try and convey the sense that the character is someone that the singer, paddy, once knew and cared about, possibly a friend or family member or past love.

Option 3:
Parents fighting - children (brother/sister)
He takes her to the park - With our singer Paddy appearing as a busker for a brief period
Brother and sister stop busker - young girl gives money making the singer appear to the audience more clearly. A storyline showing a strong relationship of love
We think this idea would fit in with the song 'joe' by Paddy Sloan. We believe this approach would be effective as many viewers can relate to the idea.

Option 4:
2 children displaying friendship
Shows the girl getting on the bus - meeting the boy
Cute activities - child like with an adult edge to them
Try and convey that these the young boy character is the singer paddy as a child, almost as if it is a memory of his, and the young girl is a friend of his, almost as if it is his first love possibly.

We liked this idea of a storyline as the video, rather than a live performance of the musician, because we seen that when other artists used it was a simplistic yet effective approach. It also tied in with many artists of the indie-pop genre and made links with the typical codes and conventions. The idea of the musician, Paddy, having a small appearance, such as a busker, we thought was a good idea has it reassured the audience of who the singer was and what he looked like etc. This concept stays away from the usual generic approach by pop artists who have an over the top video that can sometimes take away from the song itself.

Following this, we took these ideas to our focus group to get feedback. In doing this we found that option one and two seemed to be the most popular and liked by the group. Because of this we have taking parts of both these options and almost combined what we believe are the best parts of each ideas.  We have now began to start creating a storyboard from this and hope that this idea will be created into a real music video.

Research Conclusion

Having researched individually, as a group we came together and combined our findings to make one overall conclusion. We made a presentation together and a video of it can be found below, with our presentation embedded. We also made a survey to give to out audience to help us decide which would be the best song choice and also add to our research information.

The Presentation

Presenting to the Class

The Survey

Following our presentation to the class, we handed out the survey shown to the right. This survey was used as an aid to get information from people who all have different music preferences. The question asked allowed us to find out the most popular style of websites ,as well as the most liked style of the artist's appearance and also the preferred album cover styles. We also played the 2 possible song choices from our artist to see which was the most popular, from this we found that the song 'close to you' was the most liked by our class audience. However, from the feedback we also discovered that this song was not liked a lot, it was only voted the favourite due to the small variety of only 2 songs to pick from.
After a few days we then discovered that our artist had written and recorded a new song called 'joe' so we decided to listen to it. When we listened to it we immediately liked it a lot more and so did our peers when we gave them the opportunity to listen to it also. So from this we were able to clarify our song choice.
From our survey we also discovered that bolder websites, with
vibrant colours tend to be better perceived and artists with a more individual look tend to be liked more. When it came to the findings regarding album covers we found that there was a split in opinion; abstract covers are just as popular as realist style covers. This gave us the opinion that we hopefully will be able to create either style of an album cover and it will be liked as much either way.

Findings
Overall we discovered that the Kate Nash album cover was the most liked; the styling of Ed Sherran was well liked; and the websites of Daughter and Ben Howard were found to be the most popular. We hope to use this information to now start developing our website and album cover.
